About Kells Local Heroes
Kells Local Heroes (KLH) is a community-powered initiative dedicated to making the heritage town of Kells, Co. Meath, a vibrant place to visit, a dynamic hub for work, a welcoming home, and a smart choice for investment.
We do this by working in partnership with residents, other community groups, local authorities and businesses to achieve the best outcome for Kells.
Our award-winning projects and collaborations include the rejuvenation of our streetscape and cosmetic improvements to neglected buildings throughout the town, the restoration of the Parnell Gardens, the creation of a children’s playground, annual planting, litter picks, biodiversity projects and more.
We are a registered charity (Charity Registration #20104368), governed by a committee of volunteers.
Our Story
Kells Local Heroes (KLH) was founded in November 2011 during the height of an economic downturn, with one goal: to bring life back into our historic town.
Our first focus was improving the streetscape. We identified 66 neglected buildings and launched a painting project, boosting pride in the town.
From there, community spirit flourished. We’ve hosted summer street parties, a live Christmas crib, and our annual quiz is a highlight on the social calendar.
We’ve partnered with local volunteers to restore Parnell Garden, planted bulbs on approach roads, contributed to biodiversity plans, and created vibrant flower boxes on Farrell Street.
KLH has also supported popular festivals, such as the annual Hinterland Festival and arts projects.
Committee member and Creative Director Mark Smith is the driving force behind the Type Trail, and he continues to play a key role in positioning Kells as a focal point for the art of typography and printing.
In 2015, we teamed up with local groups and Meath County Council to create a children’s playground at Fair Green.
In 2017, our work was recognised with a €50,000 grant from the Heritage Council for the renewal of John Street and Castle Street.
Our annual Good Friday litter pick of the town and the approach roads is popular with volunteers.
In 2020, we supported the creation of the N52 circular pathway—now a favourite walking and cycling route. Read more about our past projects and awards.
Our aim is simple: to make Kells the best it can be. But to get there, we need your support!
